Using a 345-partial-capo:
generally, if you put the shubb partial capo on the 5th, 4th, and 3rd strings
on the second fret (or two frets above a normal capo), it is in some ways
like tuning the guitar to DADGAD. you can play in the key of D or G relative
to the capo and use just about the same fingerings you normally would use
(normally meaning without a partial capo). lots of chords can be fingered
exactly the same way, and will still sound good.
there are some chords that should be fingered differently. for example, for
a D (all chords named relative to the partial capo) chord you would want to
leave the 6th string open for the extra bass note you don't usually have.
with a G, you can optionally leave one or both of the bottom two strings
open. but with an Em, if you want the bass note (not always totally
necessary), you have to try to finger the 6th string at the same fret as the
capo (see * below), and you have to do that while also fingering the 5th and
4th strings as you normally would at the 2nd fret (again, relative to the
capo). and for an A chord, it's important to mute the 6th string, whereas it
normally doesn't hurt to let it sound.
that is the most common use of a 345-capo. the simplest alternative is that
if you put the shubb partial capo on upside down as a 234-capo, you can play
in G relative to the capo. certainly there many other ways the capo can be
used, but you'll have to experiment on your own.
some possible chord fingering for the 345-capo 2nd fret are listed below. as
you can see, most are similar to conventional fingerings. once again, all
chord names and fret numbers are relative to the partial capo:
O = "Open"
C = "partial Capo fret" (* same fret as the partial capo. you must either
reach over the capo, or you must place the capo far enough back from the fret
to leave enough room to squeeze your finger in between the capo and the
fret.)
